When I was in school, we were not taught the importance of getting involved with politics. Sure we had demonstrations of democracy and voting, such as voting in class captains and such, but they were usually inconsequential popularity contests. (as opposed to consequential popularity contests of political elections.)

Terms such as First Past the Post, Alternative Vote and the difference between local elections and general elections. People might not even be aware that there is a web site where you can check up on what your local MP is doing on your behalf.

This lack of knowledge shuts down conversation on the subject of politics and it inhibits certain people who might otherwise have valid points to make simply because they feel ill-equipped to get involved in the fight for their rights.
